.223/5.56 NATO AMMO RECOMMENDATIONS
Picking the right ammo matters more than you think. Barrel length and twist rate change velocity and terminal performance, so what works great in a 16″ rifle may underperform in a pistol.
Here’s a breakdown to help make buying decisions simple.
Rifle‑length ARs (16″+)
-
Training / Range: 55 gr FMJ (PMC X‑TAC, Federal American Eagle). Cheap, reliable, great for volume practice and zeroing.
-
Precision / Match: 69–77 gr HPBT match rounds (Nosler Match, Hornady Match, Federal Gold Match). Use for tight groups past 100 yd—match twist to weight (1:7 for heavier).
-
Varmint / Hunting: 50–55 gr V‑MAX for rapid fragmentation on small game.
-
Hunting / Defense: Bonded or monolithic 62–77 gr bullets (Barnes TSX, Federal Fusion, Black Hills). Better weight retention and barrier performance.
Pistol‑length / Short‑barrel ARs (≈14.5″ and shorter)
-
Short barrels lose lots of velocity—choose bullets that still perform at reduced speed.
-
Training: 55–62 gr FMJ for function and practice (Hornady Black 62 gr is good for feeding tests).
-
Self‑Defense / Field Use: Monolithic or bonded 62 gr options (Barnes TSX, Black Hills 62 gr) or barrier‑rated JHPs where available—these hold together and penetrate better from short barrels.
-
Precision: Focus on 0–200 yd performance; test heavier tipped match bullets only if your twist stabilizes them.
Tips for Best Results
-
Chronograph everything. Velocity loss between 16″ and 10.5″ and below is meaningful.
-
Function‑test defensive loads in the actual firearm, mags, and gas system.
-
Match twist to bullet weight. 1:7 → long/heavy; 1:8/1:9 → 55–69 gr.
-
Prefer bonded/monolithic for barrier or larger game.
